Description

The California Nebula (NGC 1499, SH2-220), is an emission nebula found in the constellation of Perseus.
Xi Persei (Menkhib or HD 24912) is the brightest star in the image and is responsible for ionizing the nebula causing it to glow.
At a distance of about 1000 light years this nebula spans a length of approximately 100 light years.
This nebula's shape resembles the US state of California and thus its name.
This nebula is located in the Orion Arm of our Galaxy
